Interesting but not all entirely true. Those original teak boats were not borrowed. They were gifted to the city during Expo 86. The Chinese Cultural Centre Dragon Boat Association was formed to take care of these boats and to further promote dragon boating in North America. It was decided a couple of years later that a cultural festival would be run during the annual races held by the CCCDBA. Thus was born what is now the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragonboat Festival. The two organizations parted ways around 2002 since the Festival no longer wished to use the teak dragonboats. The DBA still holds annual races involving those original teak dragonboats. In fact this year is the CCCDBA's 22nd Anniversary. The DBA is also affected by the development in False Creek since we had facilities on the south shore as well.
