Vancouver's Non Partisan Association has chosen their mayoral candidate for the November civic election. Among cheers, two time Vancouver city councillor Peter Ladner says the win is an indication that people want change.
It took an afternoon of discussions, debate and then a vote, but Ladner came out on top with 1,066 votes vs. Sullivan 986.
Looking visibly disappointed, Sullivan says he's not sure what the future will bring, but congratulated his competitor anyway.
"I'm very philosophical about it. I think that I do my best. I offer what I have to give to the city. I'm very respectful of the democratic process. Peter Ladner did a great job. He was very organized."
It wasn't the only surprise for Sullivan who was targeted by an Anti Poverty Committee protester. A jug of coke poured over his head.
After the announcement, Ladner shook hands with Sullivan. He says the evening has been a pleasant surprise.
"I was not very encouraged when I was waiting up there for the results and I was surprised by the results."

As an aside, pouring a jug of anything, let alone a sugary pop over a Mayor's head is completely and utterly unacceptable. It is shameful and offensive, and an embarrassment to the group that did it, which was the Anti-Poverty Coalition. I support the plight of the homeless in this city, read anything I have written or posted here, but a childish stunt like that undermines their entire cause, as did paint-balling the Olympics clock.
I disagree with a lot of the things Sam Sullivan has done as Mayor, but if I met him I would shake his hand as I would any other elected official, all the way up to Stephen Harper. The Mayor of Vancouver is a high post, and deserving of respect. If you want to disagree, do so respectfully, or else you will get nothing whatsoever.
Plain and simple, no one wants to support a douche. Grow up activists, seriously.
