The interwebs are abuzz with anger and righteous rage over the proposed Censorship Bill C-10 which would see the Conservative government use the stick of tax credits - and ultimately Telefilm funding - to govern the content of film and television productions in Canada.
This is not only a violation of our Charter Rights and Freedoms but would most assuredly signal the demise of the film and television industry in Canada.
Just as it was with the brain-damaged Copyright reform bill, citizens are rising to the challenge and getting their voices organized. First stop should be the Facebook Group: “Keep Your Censoring Hands Off Of Canadian Film and TV! No to Bill C-10!”.
The Facebook pages contain useful information for how and where to channel your opinion in the form of direct contact with your elected representatives. Tell them that Bill C-10 is an unwarranted, unwanted and decidedly vile attempt at censoring Canadian culture and a blatant misuse of government power in violation of your Charter Rights. So there.
Novelist Susan Swan, chair of the Writers' Union of Canada, announced they will also be organizing opposition. This is just the start but, because the unannounced bill has already slipped forward to Third Reading, time is of the essence.
Act now. Write an email, send a fax, make a phone call, tell your friends.
